President's Statement
Accelerating the deployment of renewable energy technologies can alleviate poverty, create jobs, improve welfare, and strengthen gender equality. Still, to fully realize this potential, the renewable energy industry must tap into a wider pool of talent—largely underrepresented women—who are depriving the energy transition of critical capacities. Globally, women represent 32% of the renewable energy workforce. While this percentage compares favorably to the broader, conventional energy sector, significant imbalances remain, both in highly developed markets and in rural communities where renewable energy solutions are only now extending energy access.
The decentralized nature of renewable energy technologies makes them particularly amenable to the women's demographic, as it brings energy choices closer to the household, community level, and MSMEs, where women tend to have greater voices. There is also the challenge of closing the gender gap in the decision-making layers of the energy sector. These concerns form the core of our mission at WIRE-A, an association galvanized and ready to empower the economy of Nigeria one green step at a time through women-oriented renewable energy initiatives.
